International Criminal Court and civil society: the challenges of fairness, efficiency and credibility
Silvana Arbia
The conference is promoted by the Master’s Degree in Institutions and Policies of Human Rights and Peace, in cooperation with the Human Rights Centre, University of Padua.
After her master’s degree in law obtained at the University of Padua, Silvana Arbia specialised in European law at the Academy of European Law in Florence and in International Law at the Hague Academy of International Law. She became judge at the end of Seventies, since then she advanced her career. In 1998 she was a member of the Italian delegation at the intergovernmental conference where the Statute of the International Criminal Court was adopted. From 1999 to 2007 she was the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda where she led the prosecution in some of the most important cases. In 2008 she was elected by the judges of the International Criminal Court as Registrar of the Court. As Registrar she is currently involved in supporting the investigations and the legal proceedings related to the cases under examination by the Court, among others, the proceedings against the Sudanese President el Bashir, the investigations concerning the acts of violence perpetrated in Kenya in 2008 and the investigations that could be initiated in the near future with regards to the recent conflict in Libya.
