Since 1995, from October 24th, the anniversary of the United Nations’ foundation, to October 30th, governments and NGOs worldwide have the opportunity to renew their commitment to disarmament during the international Disarmament Week. This week-long annual observance, established by UN General Assembly resolutions S-10/2 in 1978 and 50/72B in 1995, aims to promote a better understanding of the importance of resolving tensions through political dialogue and negotiation, rather than through armed conflict.

Since its inception, the United Nations has prioritized the prevention and resolution of crises and armed conflicts. This commitment is not only central to the UN’s mission but also integral to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The Disarmament Week holds particular significance, especially in the current global context, characterized by an increase in global military expenditure; the persistent threat of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons; the excessive and illicit trade in conventional weapons, undermining international peace, security and sustainable development and the emerging weapon technologies posing new challenges to global stability.

In light of these challenges, concrete disarmament measures are crucial. Political exchange, conflict resolution, diplomatic compromise and bargaining are the sole means to maintain international peace and security and promote sustainable developments, while upholding principles of humanity and protecting civilians. In this way, the confidence and trust among States will also benefit and armed conflicts might be prevented and ended.

In a world threatened by weapons of mass destruction, conventional arms and emerging cyberwarfare, UN Secretary-General António Guterres presented the agenda Securing our Common Future: An Agenda for Disarmament, to save humanity, to save lives, for the future generations and to strengthen partnerships around disarmament.
