World Autism Awareness Day, 2025

Wednesday, April 2, 2025, marks the worldwide celebration of "World Autism Awareness Day" (WAAD).

Established in 2007 by the United Nations General Assembly, this day aims to raise public awareness about autism spectrum disorders and draw attention to the rights of individuals and their families. Its goal is to generate actions for a more inclusive and welcoming world. Blue is the chosen color to "identify" initiatives undertaken by institutions and can be used to show solidarity and promote awareness.

Since the establishment of World Autism Awareness Day, the United Nations has embarked on a journey to promote the human rights and fundamental freedoms of people with autism, ensuring their equal opportunities for active participation in society. This journey has not been easy, but significant progress has been made over the years.

The 2007 General Assembly resolution (A/RES/62/139) highlighted the need to raise public awareness on these issues. The life experiences of people with autism have been brought to the center of global debate, expanding the movement beyond mere awareness to actively promote acceptance, appreciation, and inclusion of these individuals, recognizing the valuable contributions they make to their communities and the world at large.

The chosen theme for 2025, "Promoting Neurodiversity and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals," highlights the intersection between neurodiversity and global sustainability efforts. It's a clear signal of how inclusive policies and practices can promote positive change for people with autism while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2025 event, organized by the Institute of Neurodiversity with UN support, represents an important opportunity for discussion. Global experts, policymakers, and representatives of people with autism and their families gather to address topics such as inclusive healthcare, education, employment, and urban development. It's an opportunity to explore the role of neurodiversity in shaping policies that promote accessibility, equality, and innovation across multiple sectors.

According to the UN, by promoting dialogue and collaboration, World Autism Awareness Day 2025 reinforces the need for ongoing efforts to eliminate barriers, promote inclusive policies, and recognize the contributions of people with autism to society and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
