The Pact for the Future is a landmark Declaration aimed at creating a safer and more sustainable world for future generations. The key areas of the Pact address sustainable development, international peace and security, science and technology, youth, and the transformation of global governance. The Pact  was endorsed in September 2024, along with its two annexes of Global Digital Compact and a Declaration for Future Generations. The first key meeting on the implementation of the Pact for the Future was held with UN Member States through an informal interactive dialogue, on March 26, 2025.

During the meeting, the General Assembly President Yang acknowledged the challenges the implementation efforts would bear, paying particular attention to least developed and developing countries. He stated that nations shall adopt implementation measures according to their needs and resource restraints. In line with this, he highlighted the need for flexible trade policies, capacity building, strengthened international technical cooperation and bridging the resource gap.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned about one of the main challenges of international mistrust by saying “Geopolitical divisions and mistrust are blocking effective action, with some actively questioning the value of international cooperation and the multilateral system itself”. Moreover, he examined advancements in key areas of peace and security, finance for development, youth, and technology

Guterres noted that the Pact has been an effective commitment in preventing and managing conflict, as well as ensuring that peace-making endeavors will meet upcoming challenges.

Regarding finance for development, he stated that collaboration with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in order to renew the financial system in the direction of the Pact continues. In this regard, he stated that “Developing countries must be represented fairly in the governance of the very institutions they depend on”.

The Youth Investment Platform is underway to allocate funds to meet the demands and needs of the youth by directing national funds and investment programs, he announced. Additionally, the UN Declaration on Future Generations focuses on generations of the future, as included in the efforts to provide for young people.

Guterres communicated that the calls of the Global Digital Compact have been implemented to provide a safe cyberspace for everyone worldwide and to reduce digital inequalities, as well as a report on voluntary financing options have been prepared to help the Global South utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for public good.

Moreover, the Secretary-General, recognizing the efforts and progress made in line with the Pact’s commitments, stated that the UN must maintain its action,  “especially in light of the funding challenges,” drawing attention to the need for greater reinforcement.
