I join the universal deep affliction for the barbarian assassination of Mr.Sergio Vieira de Mello and of other members of the United Nations personnel in Bagdad. I wish to remember in particular Mrs.Nadia Jounes, whom I had the opportunity to know and deeply appreciate in her capacity of Director of the UN office in Rome. She was very close to universities and civil society movements and organisations.
The sacrifice of the UN civil servants will not be vain.
The ideals of the United Nations are shining more than ever in the minds and in the hearts of teachers and students of the University of Padua and of the European Master Degree in Human Rights and Democratisation based in Venice.
